The Helen Battle Award

Etymology of the award:

Named in 1991 in honor of Helen I. Battle, founding member and President (1962-63).

Objectives:

The Helen Battle Award is given for the best student poster at the Annual Conference of the CSZ and is intended to encourage and acknowledge excellence in scientific research and communication by students.

Cash prize of $200 and a scroll.

Source of Prize:

Funded through ZET general revenues.

Frequency of availability:

One per year.

Application/nomination procedures:

At the time of submission of abstracts for poster presentation at the Annual Conference, the student must request that his/her paper be included in the Battle Award competition.

All competitors must be students. Papers in the competition may have multiple authors; however, the competing student must be the first author. In the case of multiple authors, the student's supervisor must submit a letter, to accompany the abstract, stating that the research is primarily that of the student, and summarizing the contribution of each author.

Abstract submission deadline for the Annual Meeting.

Adjudicators:

The recipient of the Award will be selected by a Committee of Judges that will be appointed annually by the Second Vice-President of the Canadian Society of Zoologists. A broad representation of fields of zoology will be included in the Committee.

Selection procedures:

The Committee of Judges will select the Award recipient by consensus on the basis of scientific content and presentation of the poster.

Advertising:

A standing advertisement of current regulations shall be placed in the Fall issue of the Bulletin and on the web site (updated annually with appropriate contact information).

Notification of applicants/nominees:

The recipient will be announced by the Second Vice-President at the Banquet during the AGM.

Awarding of prize:

The Secretary shall prepare a suitable scroll, to be presented by the 2nd Vice-President to eh recipient at the Society banquet, if present. Otherwise the Secretary will mail the scroll. The Treasurer will issue a cheque for the prize after receiving appropriate documentation from the recipient.

Other conditions:

The regulations shall be public and available to all competitors. A student may compete only once for either the Hoar Award or the Helen Battle Award at each Annual Meeting.

A student who has won the Helen Battle Award is no longer eligible for the competition.

Tax considerations:

The Award is considered to be a "prize" for tax purposes. The Treasurer will verify appropriate taxation procedures and comply with them.
