Bob Boutilier New Investigator Award

Bob Boutillier New Investigator Award
Etymology of the award:
The award named in honor of Robert Boutillier, former Fry medalist.
Objectives:
The Bob Boutillier New Investigator Award is to encourage and honor CSZ members within five years of receiving their first academic or professional appointment.
Date established:
2001
Historical:
The award was originally named the CSZ New Investigator Award, but was renamed in 2004.
Award:
A scroll and a cash award or reimbursement of expenses not to exceed $500. The individual will be requested to make a Plenary presentation at the AGM the year of their selection.
Source of Prize:
Funded through CSZ general revenues.
Frequency of availability:
Maximum of one per year. This award will not necessarily be made each year.
Application/nomination procedures:
Nominations are to be made to the Chair of the Recognition Committee. A nominee must be a CSZ Regular Member in good standing at the time of their nomination.
Nominations can be made either by a Regular CSZ member or by the Chairs of the three CSZ Sections. If by a Section Chair, discussions should be undertaken at their May Section Meeting and only one Section nominee per year will be accepted. All nominations will be held for one additional year only. Should a Section want to make a new nomination during this second year, the carry over file will be removed from the competition.
A complete nomination file will include (1) a letter from the nominator (either an individual or Section Chair) regarding the reasons for the nomination, (2) an up to date CV of the nominee, and (3) letters in support of the nomination from no more than three individuals other than the nominator.

Adjudicators:
The Recognition Committee will adjudicate the award.
Selection procedures:
The Committee will evaluate all nominations. The individual must have made significant contributions to zoology (defined broadly) and to be considered a 'rising star' in their field. The Recognition Committee will make a recommendation to the December Council Meeting.
Advertising:
A standing advertisement for the next competition shall be placed in the Spring issue of the
Bulletin and on the web site (updated annually with appropriate contact information), encouraging CSZ members to consult their Section Chair if they would like to make a nomination, or make an individual nomination.Notification of applicants/nominees:
Following ratification, the recipient shall be notified by the President.
Awarding of prize:
The Secretary shall prepare a suitable scroll, which will be presented by the Past-President to the recipient at the AGM, if present. If not, the Secretary will mail the scroll.
The cash portion of the award will be paid by the Treasurer following receipt of any required documentation.

Tax considerations:
If received in cash, the New Investigator Award is considered a "Prize" for tax purposes.
If received as reimbursement of receipted expenses, the award should not normally have any taxation consequences. The Treasurer will verify appropriate taxation procedures and comply with them.
