Full award name:

CSZ-CPB Student/PDF Travel Research Grant

Working award name:

CPB Student Research Grant

Etymology of award:

N/A

Objectives:

This award will assist student and post-doctoral members of the CPB section with expenses incurred during visits to other laboratories, research facilities, field stations or sites to conduct zoological research. The intention is to support ancillary research activities that will supplement and enhance the applicant’s core research program, and not to fund core research itself, which is the responsibility of the applicant’s supervisor and/or funding agency.

Date established:

31 January, 2007.

Historical:

The suggestion for this award came from a CPB ad hoc committee which, in 2006, was charged with disbursing the section’s financial assets in ways that would best benefit the section and its members. This suggestion received broad support from the section membership at the 2006 business meeting.

Award:

Cash award of up to $500. The value of the award may be changed in later years depending on the financial status of the CPB section.

Source of prize:

Funded from general revenues of the Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry section of the Canadian Society of Zoologists.

Frequency of award:

Maximum of one per year. The award need not be made every year.

Application/nomination procedures:

Applications for this award will be considered from the pool of CPB student/PDF members applying for the Canadian Society of Zoologist Student/PDF Travel Research Grant. No separate application will be required.

Application deadline:

As for the CSZ Student/PDF Travel Research Grant (currently 31 Jan).

Adjudicators:

The same adjudication committee as used for the CSZ Student/PDF Travel Research Grant.

Selection procedures:

The CPB student/PDF member that finishes highest in the CSZ Student/PDF Travel Research Grant competition will receive the award. If the winner of the CSZ Student/PDF Travel Research Grant is a CPB member, then the second highest ranking CPB member will receive the award.

Advertisement:

A standing advertisement for the next competition shall be placed in the Fall issue of the Bulletin and on the web site (updated annually with appropriate contact information). The advertisements should be cross-referenced to the CSZ Student/PDF Travel Research Grant. The CPB section chair will remind members of the award by e-mail in November.

Awarding the prize:

The CPB representative on the CSZ Student/PDF Travel Research Grant adjudication committee (normally the CPB section chair) will inform the winner and the CSZ treasurer so that payment can be made. A certificate will be presented at the CPB section lunch during the annual meeting.

Other conditions:

These conditions follow those for the CSZ Student/PDF Travel Research Grant. There are no restrictions on the nationality of the hosting facility. Applicants should currently be undertaking studies at a Canadian university. Only one application per person per year will be assessed. An application cannot be submitted for work already completed.

Recipients will be required to:

(1) Provide social insurance number and permanent mailing address to the CPB section chair before payment is issued;

(2) Acknowledge to CSZ Treasurer receipt of the cheque;

(3) Produce a 250-500 word report of the results obtained under the Award and submit to CSZ Secretary (copy to CPB section chair), for publication in the CSZ Bulletin, the CSZ archives and on CSZ web page;

(5) Acknowledge the CSZ in any publications resulting from the Award.

Tax considerations:

This award is considered a "research grant" for tax purposes. Recipients may be required to report as income any amount of the grant for which they cannot substantiate expenses through receipts. The Treasurer will verify appropriate taxation procedures and comply with them.
