Etymology of the award:

Objectives:

This Award recognizes members of the CSZ who have contributed enormously to the well being of zoology in Canada by working hard for the CSZ, often well beyond the call of duty, but in ways that are not currently recognized by other Society awards such as those for research (e.g. Fry Medal, Wardle Award) or public education.

Historical:

This award seeks to provide recognition in a formal way for the significant contributions that are made to the Society by some of our officers, councilors, or members.

Award:

The award is a scroll and an engraved medal, patterned after the Fry Medal, presented at the AGM. The scroll will identify the contributions of the recipient.

Source of Prize:

Funded through CSZ general revenues.

Frequency of availability:

Offered only when a deserving candidate is identified. In exceptional, and only exceptional, cases Council may decide to award more than one medal in a given year.

Application/nomination procedures:

Nominations for the Award may be made t the Chair of the Recognition Committee by any two Society members in good standing. Nominees may not be current members of Council. The nomination should state the rationale for making the nomination.

Application deadline:

At least one month before the December meeting of Council.

Adjudicators:

All Council members present at the December meeting will act as the Adjudicating Committee.

Selection procedures:

The Committee will decide by simple majority vote whether a nominee has satisfied the Objectives and whether an award should be made.

Advertising:

A standing advertisement for the next competition shall be placed in the Spring issue of the Bulletin and on the web site (updated annually with appropriate contact information).

Notification of applicants/nominees:

The President shall notify the recipient(s) and invite them to attend the next AGM for formal presentation of their medal.

Awarding of prize:

The Secretary shall prepare a suitable scroll (outlining the contributions of the recipient), and arrange for casting and engraving of the Distinguished Service Medal, to be presented by the President to the recipient at the AGM if present. Otherwise, they will be sent to the recipient by post.
