Etymology of the award:
Named in honor of F. E. J. Fry, founding member and past President (1966-67).
Objectives:
The Fry Award is made to a Canadian Zoologist who has made an outstanding contribution to knowledge and understanding of an area in zoology, and who is expected to deliver a plenary lecture at the next AGM.

Award:
The recipient receives a Fry Medal and is expected to deliver the Fry Lecture at the next AGM. Full travel expenses for the recipient are reimbursed.
Source of Prize:
Funded through the Fry fund of ZET. This fund may be topped up from ZET general revenues if its balance is insufficient to fund the award.
Frequency of availability:
One award is made annually.
Application/nomination procedures:
Nominations are made to the Chair of the Recognition Committee and must include an up-to-date curriculum vitae, including a list of publications, and a brief statement of the significance of the work for which the candidate is nominated. The nomination must indicate that the nominee is available to deliver the Fry Lecture at the next AGM.
Unsuccessful nominations are held for two additional years.
Application deadline:
The Chair of the Recognition Committee will set a deadline, normally around the middle of November, that will allow the Committee sufficient time to adjudicate the Award before the December meeting of Council.
Adjudicators:
The Recognitions Committee will adjudicate the Award.
Selection procedures:
The Committee will evaluate all nominations. The Committee shall determine which nominations best exemplify an outstanding contribution to knowledge and understanding of an area in zoology. The Committee shall endeavor to recommend an individual who will be able to present the Fry Lecture. In keeping with this mandate, the Committee should also present to Council one or more ranked additional recommendations in the event that the top ranked individual is unable to present the Fry Lecture. The nominations are to be ratified by Council.
Advertising:
A standing advertisement for the next competition shall be placed in the Spring issue of the
Bulletin and on the web site (updated annually with appropriate contact information).Notification of applicants/nominees:
Following ratification, the President shall notify the recipient and invite the individual to present the Fry Lecture. If the individual is unable to deliver the Fry Lecture, the recipient is considered to have declined the Award for that year and the President shall select the next top ranked nominee.
Awarding of prize:
The Secretary will arrange for casting and engraving of the Fry Medal, which will be presented by the President to the recipient at the time of the Fry Lecture. The Treasurer will pay expenses upon receipt of appropriate documentation.

Tax considerations:
As reimbursement of receipted expenses, the award should not normally have any taxation consequences. The Treasurer will verify appropriate taxation procedures and comply with them.
