The Leo Margolis Scholarship

Working award name:

Margolis Award

Etymology of the award:

Named in honor of Leo Margolis, past President (1990-91) of the CSZ.

Objectives:

This scholarship has been established as a memorial to Dr. Leo Margolis, an internationally preeminent parasitologist and a staunch supporter of the Canadian Society of Zoologists since its inception in 1961. The competition for the scholarship is open to any Canadian who is registered in a graduate studies program at a Canadian university at the time the scholarship is taken up and whose research is in the field of fisheries biology.

Historical:

Was not offered for several years following establishment until sufficient donations accumulated.

Award:

Cash award of $500.

Source of Prize:

Funded through the Leo Margolis fund of ZET.

Frequency of availability:

Maximum of one per year. The award need not be made every year.

Application/nomination procedures:

Applications should be sent to the Chair of the Recognition Committee. Applications should comprise a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, up-to-date copies of University transcripts and a one page research summary (describing either the research that has been done or, for new graduate students, the proposed research plan).

Application deadline:

1 November.

Adjudicators:

The applications will be adjudicated by a Margolis Award Selection Committee composed of the Chairs of the three sections of the Society and the Past-President of the Society. The Past-President will normally be Chair.

Selection procedures:

The Committee will evaluate all applications relevant to the Objectives. The recommendation of eh Committee will be forwarded to the Council for ratification.

Advertising:

A standing advertisement for the next competition shall be placed in the Spring issue of the Bulletin and on the web site (updated annually with appropriate contact information).

Notification of applicants/nominees:

Following ratification, the Chair of the selection committee will notify all applicants.

Awarding of prize:

The Secretary will prepare an appropriate scroll, to be presented by the Past-President to the recipient at the AGM, if present. Otherwise, the Secretary will mail the scroll.

The Treasurer will issue a cheque to the recipient after receiving any necessary documentation.

Other conditions:

A recipient is eligible for only a single award. However, unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to enter in subsequent years. Any changes to the terms of the scholarship must be approved by the Council of the Canadian Society of Zoologists and ratified by a majority of members present at an annual general meeting of the Society.

Tax considerations:

This award is considered to be a "scholarship" for tax purposes. The Treasurer will verify appropriate taxation procedures and comply with them.
