Objectives:

This award will assist students and post-doctoral fellows from Canadian universities with expenses incurred during collaborative visits to other laboratories, research facilities, field stations or sites to conduct zoological research. The intention is to support ancillary research activities that will supplement and enhance the applicant's core research program, and not to fund the core research itself which is the responsibility of the applicant's supervisor.

Historical:

This Student Research Grant fund of ZET was initially established with a $5000 contribution from the CSZ, and the interest earnings were topped up annually to provide the award. In 2005/6 the CSZ provided an additional $6000 with the intention that the award would now be fully funded through earned interest with no annual top up from the CSZ.

Award:

Cash award of up to $500.

Source of Prize:

Funded through the Student Research Grant fund of ZET.

Frequency of availability:

Maximum of one per year. The award need not be made every year.

Application/nomination procedures:

Applications are to be made to the Chair of the Adjudicating Committee. Applications shall include:

(1) A research proposal (1 page single-spaced, maximum) providing an account of the work to be done, clearly stating: (a) the financial need and significance of the proposed research, and (b) a description of how the collaboration will benefit the recipient’s research program;

(2) A brief curriculum vitae;

(3) A letter of recommendation from the head of the research group in which the applicant is presently working;

(4) A letter of recommendation from the head of the research group in which the proposed work will be done, or, if not applicable, a letter of support from another individual qualified to comment on the justification of the proposed research.

Application deadline:

31 January.

Adjudicators:

The Adjudication Committee will comprise the two Student Councilors and the three Section Chairs of the CSZ. The senior Student Councilor will normally be the Chair of the Committee.

Selection procedures:

Applications will be sent to the Chair, who will be responsible for distributing them to the rest of the Committee. The decision of the Adjudication Committee will be based on the excellence of the candidate, the importance and innovative quality of the work to be done, and the significance of the collaboration to the applicant’s research program. The Committee will reach a decision by consensus. In the event that the Committee is deadlocked, the Chair will cast the deciding vote. In the absence of a meritorious proposal, the committee need not grant an award. The Chair will report the results to the first meeting of Council at the AGM. The recommendation of the Committee must be ratified by CSZ Council, and approval by the ZET board.

Advertising:

A standing advertisement for the next competition shall be placed in the Fall issue of the Bulletin and on the web site (updated annually with appropriate contact information).

Notification of applicants/nominees:

Following ratification, the President shall notify the recipient. The Chair of the Adjudication Committee shall notify unsuccessful applicants.

Awarding of prize:

The Treasurer of ZET will make payment of the award on receipt of any necessary documentation.

Other conditions:

There are no restrictions on the nationality of the hosting facility. Applicants should currently be undertaking studies at a Canadian university. Only one application per person per year will be assessed. An application cannot be submitted for work already completed.

Recipients will be required to:

(1) Provide social insurance number and permanent mailing address to ZET Treasurer before payment is issued;

(2) Acknowledge to ZET Treasurer receipt of the cheque;

(3) Produce a 250-500 word report of the results obtained under the Award and submit to CSZ (4) Secretary, for publication in the CSZ Bulletin, the CSZ archives and on CSZ web page;

(5) Acknowledge the CSZ and the ZET in any publications resulting from the Award.

Tax considerations:

This award is considered a "research grant" for tax purposes. Recipients may be required to report as income any amount of the grant for which they cannot substantiate expenses through receipts. The Treasurer will verify appropriate taxation procedures and comply with them.

The Zoological Education Trust and the Canadian Society of Zoologists offer an annual research grant to assist students and post-doctoral fellows with expenses incurred during collaborative visits to other laboratories, research facilities, field stations or sites to conduct zoological research. This grant is intended to foster enhanced research opportunities beyond those in the recipient's core research program.

Value: Up to $500

Application: Interested students and post-doctoral fellows are invited to submit applications for the grant. The application should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae (CV) and an account of the work to be done (no more than one page single-spaced), clearly stating the financial need and significance of the proposed research including a description of how the collaboration will benefit the recipient’s research program. Additionally, applicants should include a letter of recommendation from the head of the research group in which the applicant is presently working and a supplementary letter of support either from the head of the research group in which the proposed work will be done or from another individual qualified to comment on your justification of the proposed research. There are no restrictions on the nationality of the hosting facility, but applicants should currently be attending a Canadian university. Only one application per person per year will be assessed. An application cannot be submitted for work already completed.

The committee will be guided by the excellence of the candidate, the importance and innovative quality of the work to be done and the significance of the collaboration to the applicant’s research program. In the absence of a meritorious proposal, the committee need not grant an award.
