Etymology of the award:

Objectives:

This award is intended to recognize excellence in public education about zoology.

Date Established:

1999

Historical:

One year free membership in the CSZ was added to the prize in 2004, for recipients who were not already CSZ members.

Award:

The award comprises a $300 cash prize and a scroll. If the recipient is not already a member of the Canadian Society of Zoologists, a 1-year free membership will be awarded by the Society.

Source of Prize:

Funded through ZET general revenues.

Frequency of availability:

Maximum of one per year. The award need not be made every year.

Application/nomination procedures:

Nominations are to be sent to the Chair of the Recognition Committee. Nominations may be made by any CSZ member and should include the rationale for such nomination.

Application deadline:

1 October.

Adjudicators:

The Recognition Committee will adjudicate this award.

Selection procedures:

The Recognition Committee will evaluate all nominations with respect to the Objectives. Recommendations of the Committee shall be forwarded to Council for ratification and then to the ZET board for approval.

Advertising:

A standing advertisement for the next competition shall be placed in the Spring issue of the Bulletin and on the web site (updated annually with appropriate contact information).

Notification of applicants/nominees:

Following ratification the President shall notify the recipient. The Chair of the Recognition Committee shall notify the nominators of unsuccessful applicants.

Awarding of prize:

The Secretary will prepare an appropriate scroll, to be presented by the Past-President to the recipient at the AGM, if present. Otherwise, the Secretary will arrange to send it by post. The Treasurer shall issue a cheque for the prize once any necessary documentation has been received.

Tax considerations:

The Award is considered to be a "prize" for tax purposes. The Treasurer will verify appropriate taxation procedures and comply with them.
