Job Title: PhD student: Insect physiology, muscle regeneration, mitochondrial remodelling
Location: Calgary, Alberta
Job Type: Graduate Student
Description: The Lebenzon lab is recruiting a PhD student to join our team in summer or fall 2026. We are environmental insect physiologists who approach questions from an integrative perspective. From molecular biology and ‘omics, to eco-physiology, we strive to understand how cellular processes drive changes in organismal-level physiology and ultimately adaptations to challenging environments. Our research primarily focuses on agricultural pests as we work towards developing physiology-informed solutions to pest management.
Details:
Annual Salary/Minimum stipend: $31,000
Proposed stare date: May or September 2026
Project Description:
We are recruiting a PhD student to explore flight muscle regeneration, mitochondrial remodelling, and metabolic physiology in overwintering Colorado potato beetles, a global pest of potato plants. Most insects overwinter in a state of hibernation known as diapause where they massively suppress their metabolism to save energy. Colorado potato beetles use a unique strategy to reach these hypometabolic states; they degrade entire mitochondrial networks in their flight muscle during diapause using mitophagy, and, more impressively, regrow it all on demand when they need to fly in the spring! This project will explore how beetles rebuild their mitochondria and muscle at the end of diapause, and the implications for their survival and reproductive success in the spring.
What we offer:
We foster a research environment build on ambition, kindness, and curiosity. Through our diverse perspectives, we nurture an inclusive and passionate community committed to advancing the field of insect physiology. We provide opportunities to develop a range of skills including (but not limited to), wet lab skills, effective scientific communication, inclusive mentoring, and community engagement. Our lab is in Calgary, Alberta, located in the foothills of the Rockie’s, just a one-hour drive from Banff National Park!
Qualifications:
• A thesis-based MSc (or equivalent) in biology, animal physiology, zoology, or a related field
• Previous experience in one or more of the following is an asset, but not required: molecular biology, mitochondrial physiology, respirometry, cell biology, entomology
• Strong attention to detail, organization and time-management skills
• Ability to work independently and a commitment to working equitably within diverse teams
To apply: Assessment of applications will begin on September 8th, 2025 and continue until the position is filled. To apply, email Jackie Lebenzon (Jackie.lebenzon@ucalgary.ca) with the subject line: “Muscle PhD” with a single PDF containing: 1) CV or Resume outlining your academic, work and volunteer experience, 2) A 1 page cover letter summarizing your qualifications, research interests and how this PhD position will help you realize your future goals and 3) unofficial university transcripts.
