Job Title: PhD student: Overwintering physiology in insect pests of canola
Location: Calgary, Alberta
Job Type: Graduate Student
Description: The Lebenzon lab is recruiting a PhD student to join our team in May or September 2026. We are environmental insect physiologists who approach questions from an integrative perspective. From molecular biology and ‘omics, to eco-physiology, we strive to understand how cellular processes drive changes in physiology and ultimately adaptations to challenging environments. Our research primarily focuses on agricultural pests as we work towards developing physiology-informed solutions to pest management.
Project description: We are seeking a motivated PhD student to lead a fully funded 4-year project exploring the overwintering physiology of economically important pests of canola, striped and crucifer flea beetles. The successful candidate will integrate field and lab techniques to better understand how striped and crucifer flea beetles survive prairie winters and develop temperature emergence models for improved pest detection. They will also have the opportunity to travel across Alberta to help with population monitoring at applied research stations and work with collaborators at the University of Alberta.
What we offer: We foster a research environment build on ambition, kindness, and curiosity. Through our diverse perspectives, we nurture an inclusive and passionate community committed to advancing the field of physiological entomology. We provide opportunities to develop a range of skills including (but not limited to), field/wet lab skills, effective scientific communication, inclusive mentoring, and community engagement. Our lab is in Calgary, Alberta, located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, just a one-hour drive from Banff National Park!
