The Department of Zoology at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, invites applicants for a full-time, PhD-level research associate in fish physiology and gill regeneration.

Reporting to Dr. Colin Brauner, the applicant will have exceptional skills and research accomplishments in fish physiology, with a focus on gill resection and regeneration in Atlantic salmon integrating molecular, biochemical and physiological responses. The successful applicant will work closely with an active research group focused on various aspects of fish physiology.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in a relevant field (comparative or fish physiology) and at least four years postdoctoral research experience related to fish physiology and gill regeneration.

Other required qualifications include:
Excellent scientific writing skills, including a strong record of publishing high quality journals.
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Record of mentoring research students.
Experience with salmon rearing and husbandry.
Experience with histology and immunohistology techniques.
Experience with transcriptomics, RNAseq and RNA scope techniques.
Experience with biochemical assays and whole-animal performance measurements including metabolic rate assessment.
Proficiency in quantitative image analysis of immunohistochemistry (IHC) and RNAscope datasets, including image segmentation, cell detection, signal quantification, and spatial analysis of large microscopy image datasets.
Proficiency with image analysis and digital pathology software such as QuPath, ImageJ/Fiji, CellProfiler.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the Department of Zoology and the Biodiversity Research Centre research activities.

This is a 12-month Research Associate position, expected to start in July 2026.
The expected salary for this position is $76,128 per year.
